Writing Bogwise

magical places, new approaches …

A series of online workshops exploring how moors, swamps and other boggy places don’t just offer inspiring locations and fascinating subjects – they also guide us into new ways of writing.

With expert facilitators Clare Shaw and Anna Chilvers, you'll travel to bogs, moors and peatlands around Britain and beyond, and asking - what can we learn from bogs? What do they need from us? How can that seep into our writing?

Expect …. the art of listening, fluidity, memoir, moss, mythologies, animism, storytelling, history, seeing the invisible, deep time, creative non-fiction, self-care. queer ecology, poetry and much much more.

Anna Chilvers (Bluemoose) and Clare Shaw (Bloodaxe) are popular writers and facilitators who have authored and edited 14 books between them - including novels, poetry and creative non-fiction. In 2025, they co-edited “The Book of Bogs”, featuring leading writers of ecology, nature and place.

You can book workshops on an individual basis for £25 per workshop, or, for a complete immersion in the world of the bog, you can book all eight for £125 (three workshops free!).

Booking is through Eventbrite here.

The workshops will be on Wednesday mornings from 10am-12 noon on the following dates:

18 March, 15 April, 20 May, 17 June, 22 July, 19 August, 16 September, 21 October
